Composition & Molecules
Phosphorus burns in air to produce phosphorus pentoxide.
4P + 5O2 --> 2P2O5
White phosphorous, specifically, consists of tetrahedral P4 molecules. In some cases, phosphate is created, as seen. It has a tetrahedral shape with one double bond and no lone pairs around the central atom. As seen to the left, a P4O10 molecule is displayed, which is the same as P2O5. It has 102 degree and 123 degree bond angles and a s2p3 hybridization.
